JJJ sure milked the “hottest 100 songs of all time” playlist this year. In case you missed it listeners were drip-feed the back 80 songs over a week in small instalments which were then replayed in two 50 song slabs on Saturday and Sunday. Folks accustomed to removing furniture from their house and filling the bath with beer and alco-pops to celebrate the occasion were forced to quit their jobs and party like its 1999 for a week straight. So what does the list tell us about JJJ listeners circa ’09? First of all the nation’s “alterative yoof” sure don’t mind a classic or six. Golden oldies from the 60s and 70s snuck into the top 20 including Queen (Bohemian Rhapsody), John Lennon (Imagine), and Led Zep (Stairway to Heaven). Startling omissions in the 100 included large chunks of punk rock royalty - The Stooges, The Saints, The Ramones, The Clash – and an almost total exclusion of female artists (Unfinished Sympathy by Massive Attack was the exception). Nirvana’s Smells like Teen Spirit slipped in at number one as predicted here weeks ago. And doesn’t Mr Cobain still make you want to jump around and break stuff! All up a great selection of songs and a telling insight into the national yoof psyche.

Only by Night was not only Australia’s biggest album of 2008 it helped the nation’s lagging CD sales surpass 2007 trade – a feat in the age of MP3. The album’s singles – Sex On Fire and Use Somebody - rocketed to first and third on the JJJ Top One Hundred and tickets for their up coming tour sold out before you could say “dang, I done missed out”. What is it about Australia and KOL? It’s an infatuation that has built with each album on the back of consistently pummelling live shows. Your only chance to see these sex-fuelled sons of a preacher man kick out the jams this March is to pay an exorbitant price on E-bay. Think of it as an investment.
