On the verge of the brands' 20th anniversary, we catch up with the head designer of Henleys, Emma Boseley.
Tell us about the new season of Henleys, and what sets the collection apart? Remaining true to Henleys heritage style, this SS16 season is about nautical prints meets 90’s sportswear. Classic colours of black, white and navy are highlighted by pops of red and blue, while reflective prints feature heavily to create the link from modern sportswear to street.
What are the must-have items from the upcoming season? The Isaac moto pant, Saluda Tank, Lucas short, Johnson Tee, Clavin Tee, Ritchie Short and Isaac Moto short
How does Henleys remain fresh, while also honouring it’s heritage? Fashion is constantly changing. With each range we like to move with current trends in terms of heritage sportswear, whilst using contemporary colours, fabrications and print applications to remain current to the ever-changing market.
This year is Henley’s 20th Anniversary. Are there some surprises to look forward to? Yes, we’ve shot both our Summer 2016 range in New York as well as our Winter 2017 range, look forward to some amazing imagery and a big leap forward for Henleys in direction and marketing.
How long have you been designing for Henleys, and what were you doing beforehand? A year and a half. I was brought on to give Henleys a new look and feel, and move it close to the market. Before this I was working at menswear brand Rodd & Gunn.
Henleys has UK roots, this range was designed in Australia and the campaign was shot in the US. How has each country influenced the aesthetic of this collection? The sporty ‘lad’ look has made a return to both the UK and US markets, which we all know influences the Australian market. I’ve taken influence from both of these countries for both Summer 2016 and Winter 2017.
What is your favourite thing about designing for a brand like Henleys? My favourite thing about designing for Henleys is the challenge of refreshing the brand and doing it justice. We are moving Henleys in the right direction and it’s definitely a brand to watch in the future. Where did you draw inspiration when designing this range? We travel the globe gaining inspiration from the worlds fashion leaders in NYC, Tokyo and LA. We see the trends worn on international streets, and deliver wearable styles that encompass this to our brand loyal customers. What is your favourite menswear trend at the moment? The rugby polo shirt – look out for the Brendel Polo in Winter 2017
Who is your all-time style icon? How have they influenced you as a designer? Ronnie Fieg, ownerand CEO of Kith in the United States. His simple approach to branded t-shirts, whilst giving them a classic twist with heritage sports style, is inspirational as well as so on trend. He’s always got his finger on the pulse and constantly inspires us.
What can we expect for the future from Henleys looking beyond Summer? Henleys for Winter 2017 will continue to be inspired by Heritage sportswear with the inclusion of key styles such as the Rugby polo, panelled spray jackets, white fleece sweaters and the moto pant. Moving forward we will continue shooting our campaigns abroad; stay tuned for some exciting content!
