Founded by Shepard Fairey, one of the best-known street artists in the world, Obey is continually surrounded by controversy!

According to the brand itself, "Fairey steeps his ideology and iconography in self-empowerment. With biting sarcasm verging on reverse psychology, he goads viewers, using the imperative “obey,” logo to take heed of the propagandists out to bend the world to their agendas."

It is on these ideals and Shepard’s artistic style that the Obey clothing line is based.

As an extension of Shepard’s work, Obey clothing was founded in 2011 to act as another canvas to spread his art and message to the people.

The brand takes its inspiration from skateboarding, the Do It Yourself counterculture of punk rock, classic military style and workwear basics.

This is blended effortlessly with the elements and cultural movements Shepard has based his art career on.

The messages within the clothes hold deeper meanings which are open for interpretation and debate, which is what Shepard constantly looks to create with his work, “all in the name of fun and observation.”
